In Memory of Dr. Howard C. Peterson (1928-2014)

SDSM&T family mourns loss of beloved Howard “Dean Pete” Peterson (GeolE50).

Mentor,  advocate, alumnus, icon – These  words only begin to describe the man who touched the lives of countless SDSM&T students, faculty, staff,  friends, and most certainly, alumni.  Dr. Howard “Dean Pete” Peterson (GeolE50) served as Dean of Students for 23  years.  However, his legacy at SDSM&T spanned more than five decades.  Howard referred to himself as a ‘true freshman’  n 1946, enrolling upon graduation from Alpena High School; and he often referred to the early days as a student when  walking with alumni.  Dean Pete shared many stories over the years, always with a special word of appreciation, pride, and  joy for the students, alumni, and friends that made-up his special memories.  Howard was also a ‘walking Alumni Directory’ and was uncanny with his recall of students and their families before, during, and after their time at Mines.  His service  truly was a lifetime dedicated to everything related to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, culminated by  earning Professor Emeritus status in Social Sciences SDSM&T.  For any alumni and friends that wish to send stories or  notes of remembrance, please feel free to use alumni@sdsmt.edu and we will be certain they are shared with the family.  The http://www.osheimschmidt.com/ website also has a ‘Guestbook’ available for those that wish to share a note with the family their too.  We will miss you, Dean Pete!
